Algy dropped his cigarette case.

It clattered onto the floor with a deafening crash. In the silence that followed, Biggles muttered the beginning of an expletive and hurriedly covered the rest of it with a cough.

Maggie appeared at the door leading towards the kitchenette, a teacup in one hand and a spoon in the other. “Is everything all right, sir?” she inquired.

Biggles waved a distracted hand. “Yes, Maggie,” he said. “Yes, everything’s—” Lost for words, he waved his hand again in a vague manner, and Maggie disappeared back into the kitchenette, closing the door behind her.

It was Algy who spoke to the boy first. “You’re his son?” he demanded incredulously. “You’re Biggles’ son?” He cast Biggles a sidelong glance, his eyes asking an unspoken question.

“I don’t know,” admitted Sebastian frankly. His accent hovered somewhere between the American and the British. “My mother’s always told me that a James Bigglesworth who works in the British Air Police is my father, and I’ve certainly got no reason to doubt her.”

“Your mother?” echoed Biggles, in a voice of hushed awe. “Who is your mother?”

Sebastian looked surprised. “She’s your wife, of course. Jane Bigglesworth?”

Algy made a very undignified noise. Biggles choked. “Jane?” he said, in the voice of someone who has just survived a strangling. “You’re Jane’s son? I thought—I didn’t—I mean—I—”

“I thought she’d—” began Algy, and then stopped at the expression on Biggles’ face.

“How is she?” asked Biggles.

“She’s all right,” replied Sebastian, with the casualness of youth. “She went back into the secret service after she returned to America, you know. She’s on an undercover mission now, as a matter of fact.”

“And is she—” Biggles began eagerly, then trailed off and looked away.

“Er,” said Algy, to cover the awkward silence that followed, “and, er, what are you doing here, exactly?”

“Well, mom used to leave me with my aunt when she went on missions, but my aunt sort of died last year, so she decided to send me to school in Britain. I was supposed to spend my summer break with her, but she’s currently…missing” –he paused briefly before the last word, then carried on— “and it’s the summer break now and I don’t have anywhere else to go.”

A long silence fell after this extraordinary and somewhat garbled statement.

“Why don’t you just stay at school?” asked Biggles faintly. “I’m sure something could be arranged…”

“Because the headmaster is an idiot,” said Sebastian, with the air of someone stating the obvious. “And the other kids are mental. Anyway, there’s no reason I should stay at school when I can just stay with my father, is there?”

Biggles made a strange sound.

Algy said, in a voice full of dread, “You say your mother’s…missing? Did you want us to help you look for her or something?”

Biggles’ eyes flared with sudden interest and hope.

“Look for her?” repeated Sebastian, sounding surprised. “No, of course not. Why would I want you to look for her? She’ll turn up.”

“So what did you come here for?” asked Biggles.

“Isn’t it obvious?” Sebastian smiled. “I’ve come to spend some quality time with my father.”

  1. Uh-oh I sense trouble brewing. Biggles all starry eyed and eager even after all that lady did! Will that chap NEVER learn?
I can see Algy is going to need some help with this situation. Hope he gets on the phone to Ginger and Bertie FAST.

Nice one, Biggles. As if you've lots of lady friends who would qualify!
Be kind to the lad but just remember what his mother did to Algy. You don't want to see her again, EVER.

  3. This is just too too wonderful. Soppy, your thesis break seems to have done you no harm at all :-)))

But you be careful - we do NOT want Biggles and Algy falling out again.

As for Sebastian wanting to spend some quality time with his father...

Hilarious - and I fear both Biggles and Algy may have met their match.

  4. Oh.Oh.Oh. Just too funny, Soppy :)))) But, now I've recovered from my bout of hysteria, may I endorse the above comments and remind you that I live just a bit south of you....and I'm watching. Do.Not.Break.Damage.Or.Otherwise.Injure.Biggles. I am serious....very, very serious.
And I agree, SA, I do think Biggles and Algy have just met their match.

  5. Biggles never saw Jane the way the rest of us did. i think he still loved her up to the end of Biggles Married III, even when she walked away. (Often wondered if he regretted letting her go because he was worried about Algy--after all he'd had no trouble doing horrid things to Algy before that because of her...)

FB-Our Biggles is quite the ladykiller, isn't he?

Don't know why you're all so worried about what I'd do to Biggles. I'm not heartless, you know.

    Well..not always.
