His most poignant thought, the thing that
worried him most, was the fact that he had been responsible for Algy’s death in
the first place by causing him to be posted from France to the land of the
Israelites. That Algy might have been killed if he had remained in France did
not occur to him.

I always loved this bit - so very 'young Biggles'. And as he was to become, always feeling responsible for what happened whether or not it really was within his control.
