The Craft Of FanFic

FanFic Question of the Week:
What type of fanfic do you hate to see?
For me, it's fics that are too *ahem* "adult", pairing characters who would never get together, using them as props to act out twisted fantasies from the author's mind. I don't think there's anything wrong with writing adult-themed works of fiction, as long as the author is using characters that I don't know and love...

I know that bad grammar and spelling are pet peeves of fanfic readers, but I'd be interested to hear more. What kind of fanfic makes you close your browser after two sentences? What kind of fanfic makes you want to fly a Spitfire over the author's house? Feel free to share in the comments section below!

  1. What makes me 'close my browser' as you so aptly put it, is really bad spelling and grammar. However, putting that aside, what most offends me most is inappropriate behaviour (and conversation) by my favourite characters. By that I don't necessarily mean 'adult' behaviour, but behaviour that in my mind I know they would never, under any circumstances, indulge in.

I exclude a certain fic on this blog site as I KNOW it is not the real Biggles, so I know it is not inappropriate behaviour :-)))))

  2. First comes denial, then anger, and finally...acceptance. I see we still have a long way to go :)

But yes, I know that bad spelling is something that turns a lot of people off. Not just occasional typos, but continuous errors over and over and OVER: "She tok his hands and look into his eyes..." REALLY!

  3. I echo what Soppy and SA have said.in addition, I was appalled to read in a forward to one Biggles fanfic that they really should get around to reading the books one day. EXCUSE ME? Also, things which are obviously wrong, talking about a criminal turning Queens evidence - in 1944? Add to that, spending dollars in the UK, opening the hood of a car, giving my Bertie a truly awful non-Bertie dialogue, the list is probably endless. Thank goodness, one forum I know seem to be getting things right.

  4. How on EARTH does one write a fanfic without having read the original works to fanfic from?

I'm not too bothered about the dollars in England stuff myself--sometimes the writer just wasn't thinking very clearly and the editors didn't catch the mistake either. (Unless it's someone who keeps on paying dollars for EVERYTHING in England, then I might get a little annoyed..)

  6. Was the fanfic good or good-ish, though, despite the fact that they hadn't read the books? Or did they have Biggles doing silly things?
