"I've been thrown out on my ear before today, but I believe this is the first time I've gone in on it. If this is how you visit your uncles, you might have warned me to bring some overalls. This is my best suit--"
--Biggles in the Cruise of the Condor
Just WHO had the nerve to throw Algy out on his ear?
And, awww, how sweet, he actually got out his best suit to come and visit Biggles' uncle (who is very indirectly related to him as well, but still. It shows that he has manners.)
I always imagined that, of all of them, Algy had the best manners. He would have been well brought up in a secure family background and a proper social circle, unlike Biggles' isolated childhood in India, and Ginger's childhood in a mining village. Don't know about Bertie.
ReplyDeleteThat was the occasion when Biggles made a remark to the effect that Algy was the man who had survived the war more by luck than judgement, which was pretty cheeky, considering...
Algy is the only one of them who other people refer to as "charming" after all.
ReplyDeleteAs for surviving the war more by luck than judgement...Biggles is lucky I don't have my bombs on me, that's all I can say.
I can only agree with you!
ReplyDeleteAnd in Biggles in the Terai the manager of the aerodrome descibes Algy as a courteous man and a delightful companion, and says all the staff liked him!
Not surprising. Algy is always very nice to people who aren't trying to kill him, and he's especially nice to women.
